The former CEO of Mauritius Telecom, Sherry Singh, has been transferred to the Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT) for questioning in connection with the ongoing investigation into the “Moustass Leaks.” He was taken into custody this afternoon by the Special Striking Team, with his legal representation, Me Urmila Boolell, arriving at Central Barracks around 5:30 PM.

In addition to Singh, three other individuals were arrested on Friday, November 1, as part of the investigation: Jamirouddin Mohamad Yeadally, Nadeem Reshade Varsally, and Kaviraj Ramjhuria. They are presently undergoing questioning at the Central Barracks, although the specific charges against them have not yet been disclosed.

The Moustass Leaks scandal pertains to the recent emergence of recorded phone conversations involving various political figures, lawyers, civil society members, diplomats, and journalists. The leaked recordings, disseminated on social media, have prompted widespread concern.

In light of this development, the government has implemented a temporary suspension of social media access in Mauritius, effective until November 11, the day after the general elections scheduled for November 10. This decision has faced significant opposition from the opposition, non-parliamentary parties, legal experts, and civil society groups, who perceive it as an encroachment on free expression and a maneuver to stifle dissent in the lead-up to the elections.
