When is the best time to do hiking in Mauritius?
If you are interested in hiking or any other outdoor activities, then the best time to visit Mauritius is from May to October.
May to October is somewhere in the middle of winter and summer season, so the air is cooler, less humid, perfect for hiking. It is a great time for diving, snorkeling, and other water-related activities as well.
The months of August to October are quite popular as well since it is the flowering season in Mauritius. So, during this time, you will be able to sight some exotic flora and fauna like wild guavas, dodo tree, pink pigeon, Mauritius kestrels, and so on.
How to Reach Piton De La Petite Riviere Noire Mountain Trail
The starting point of this trail is just 300 m from the Gorges viewpoint in Black River Gorges National Park. You can reach here by either a private car (if you are a tourist, you can rent a car and drive yourself), bus or cab/taxi.
I would not suggest a bus though since the closest bus stop is around 6KMs away and you would have to walk quite a bit to reach here (it would be a trail hike in itself).
The trek takes can be completed in around 5 hours. So, you can do it in the first half part of your day and then head to Chamarel after it or relax on one of the beaches nearby.
Make sure to carry sunscreen, cap, backup, enough water and snacks. Energy bars work best since they are easy to carry and filling.
