Wingsley Christome has been sentenced to 8 years in prison for the theft of 10 baby monkeys and an additional 2 years for trafficking in these animals, resulting in a total sentence of 10 years in prison. Magistrate Pritiviraj Balluck of the Intermediate Court announced this decision earlier today, citing the severity of the penalty due to the defendant’s criminal record.
To recap, Christome was charged with stealing baby monkeys from a farm near the gorges of Rivière Noire and subsequently selling them. These events transpired in February 2023. Meanwhile, his accomplice, Bhavesh Heeta, has been fined Rs 2,000 for his involvement in the matter.
